Meet Juniper’s Industrial Designer, Mark

Before our contemporary lighting designs go to the public market, Juniper’s Industrial Designer Mark, works with the rest of the Industrial Design team to conceptualize, prototype, troubleshoot, and develop new ideas.

1. What’s your role at Juniper?

I am an Industrial Designer here at Juniper. We have a very collaborative design team that allows us to challenge our skills to develop new ideas that advance the inherited knowledge accumulated by Juniper in the pursuit of innovative lighting. With a background in the New York lighting scene and the Maker Movement of the last 10 years, I like to apply my experience to help solve problems encountered by small design focused businesses. Each day here at Juniper is very different. I am lucky to have the opportunity to collaborate with many of the different departments including development, marketing, sales, and production. This allows us to have unified goals and to build off of each others creativity and passion.

2. Where are you originally from?

I am from Littleton Colorado, living in Denver for most of my life. About 3 years ago I did the unthinkable and left the most enjoyable climate for the pursuit of enriching my cultural experience and expanding my creative opportunities. The thing I miss most about Colorado is the fresh mild dry air, and of course the Rocky Mountains.

3. What’s the best thing about Juniper?

Juniper gives people the opportunity to express themselves and share ideas. We invest in ideas and the belief that if we work together we can accomplish more.

4. What are your interests outside of work?

For better or worse design is almost always on my mind. I seek out experiencing the creative energy New York City offers. Also, ball is life.

5. Where can we find you in New York the most?

The parks in New York are extremely important. When I’m in need of some fresh air nothing quite beats riding my bike to Prospect Park. Otherwise I’m usually hanging out in my neighborhood. I love the energy Bed Stuy offers, and it’s all right at my doorstep.

6. What’s your favorite fixture at Juniper? Why?

My favorite fixture at Juniper is the THIN Task Lamp. It is seemingly simple, but the amount of effort and refinement to get it to where it is today is truly inspiring. It doesn’t seek your attention, instead, it simply provides an enjoyable experience causing you to invite it into your life.
