[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Deanne Walczak, Principal Designer of 360° Design, specializes in residential interior design. After her latest project, which installed a Love Me Not Pendant in a modern bathroom space, we asked her a few questions to understand her background, design philosophy, and more about this project.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="18704" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/love-me-not/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Tell us about your background.

My career to become an Interior Designer, was not a conventional path one might assume you would take. I went to school for Graphic Design, and with numerous twists of faith, I ended up starting my 360º Design company many years later.   Looking back on some of my careers along the way; whether it was working in the television + professional sports industries, Graphic Design or Marketing platforms, I take note of a few common threads that were always a constant throughout my journey. All my jobs were always hands-on; in very creative fields, and every day the challenges + tasks assigned, were different.  These key qualities, I have recognized as assets to me, and are my favorite part of my current role as an Interior Designer. I love that my job is different every single day. That the challenges of each space, and the vision of each client is always different, and the solutions are commonly found by pairing a touch of psychology & vision, paired with key design elements, that all lead to the best design solutions for the space at hand.   I am in my sixth year of operating my own business, with six years prior to that, working in the industry. I have mostly work with residential spaces, but have had the privilege of working on commercial projects as well. In addition to those platforms, I also do virtual home staging + conventional home staging, with a few realtors in the Westchester area.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="18701" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/love-me-not/"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]

What is your design philosophy?

I avoid niching myself with one particular style or direction when it comes to designing spaces for my clients. I find myself following a Frank Lloyd Wright philosophy, of balancing and pairing objects of function and form, to create a more harmonious optimal living space. Connecting organic material from nature, with an optimal space plan, proper lighting, and a great use of color, allows the elements to create a more harmonious living environment. In addition to this core philosophy, I utilize my past Graphic Design abilities, to help support my visions more clearly to the client(s) by creating visual schematics of their project in the early stages of development. After realizing that the majority of my clients had difficulty envisioning the overall plan/direction of their project, which delayed making key decisions needed to propel the project forward, I quickly realized that if I could show them the end result, rather than trying to convince them of my plan. It would now allow them to take much bigger risks with the decision process, or with items in the space, that they normally would not consider. It was a win-win for both parties and has proven to be a valuable resource for my design company, and the proof that a picture really is worth a thousand words.

What was your inspiration for this project?

With this current master bathroom project, there wasn't one clear inspiration element or idea that drove us to the end result. It was more the "sum of the parts" kind of a vision. I discussed with the clients what their wants and needs were for the 20 x 20 master bathroom suite and then started sending inspiration photos to tap into a direction of the type of room that inspired them.   They had also been traveling abroad and determined a feel and a few amenities that they experienced while on their travels that they knew they wanted to incorporate in their space. And I knew, to not lose sight of staying true to the style of the home, which was Arts and Crafts/Art Deco. From there my vision took shape, and the space planning began. We discussed details, tweaked and fine-tuned our direction to incorporate a few elements from two design options, and came up with our ultimate vision.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="18703" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/love-me-not/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

What obstacles did you face for this project?

When I think back on building this bathroom, there were very few obstacles we encountered throughout the project. We had to adjust the placement of where we used the teak on the ceiling due to wiring and ducts, and we changed the direction of the layout of the floor tiling so it ran at a vertical direction instead of a horizontal direction when it came up the shower wall. I cannot lie though, I did lose sleep a few nights on one key component.   My client had a doctors appointment and was inspired by the walls at the building in which her appointment was. We had originally had our porcelain floor tile continuing onto the shower walls, rather than changing to a different decorative tile, as most bathroom showers do. The decision to do so was based on the over-scaled custom Acacia double vanity that was going in the room, on the opposite wall, which we anticipated to be our "wow" in the room (until we found our light). The species of wood being used had a lot of movement and we felt the simplicity of a solid, monochromatic, clean-lined tile continuing up the wall would offset this feature on the vanity. She came home with pictures of the walls and asked if we could do that in the shower. It was staying with the existing monochromatic palette and scale of the existing porcelain tile originally selected, but we would be adding every couple of tiles a blue stone thick slab that would ultimately create a subtle in and out movement to an otherwise flat wall. I drew out a plan and discussed with my contractor to implement this new feature to randomly add the slabs of bluestone to offset the existing porcelain. As the plan developed and began taking shape, the client's husband questioned the decision more than once, which reinforced a small doubt inside me that I had not conveyed to anyone else. So I lost a few nights of sleep over this, but every time I got back in front of that wall, I convinced him to stay the course and trust the vision.   I remember reading a quote that just helped me keep my doubts at bay and encourage the vision. It said, "Feeling nervous is a good sign you're making something original"...and that we did! He trusted the process and saw the vision through, and loved the ultimate design. And I eventually exhaled and caught up on my loss of sleep.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="18702" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/love-me-not/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Why did you choose the Love Me Not Pendant?

Throughout the entire duration of the production of the bathroom, we researched for the perfect light to ground our anticipated space. We actually had purchased one very early on in the project that we had agreed worked, but by all means, did not love. When the teak ceiling needed to be moved to the center of the room instead of on the soffit line, like we had originally designed, it changed our vision and I suggested we return the first purchased light. I knew that it was never going to be able to hold the center of the room, like the negative space dictated the right fixture to do. The teak was now being used on the ceiling centered in the room, and was going to be the background to something that needed to be amazing. At this point, it also became clear that the fixture needed to be something that featured a soft, feminine line, since the space around it had evolved and was reading very masculine. We needed to try and balance the masculine to feminine line of the room and offset the elements of the hard stone and wood that were used throughout the rest of the space, and helped support the curvy feminine line of our beautiful Cheviot modern claw foot tub.  And so the search continued.   Everything just fell flat.... Until one day, our search ended with your beautiful custom Love Me Not lighting fixture. It had me from hello. I  saw it, and I knew immediately it was the everything we had been searching months for. It was just the perfect bling to the little black dress. I seriously didn't know how I was going to move on from it if the clients did not see the absolute perfection it had to offer to their space. And just like that, our amazing, magnificent, Acacia over-scaled custom vanity had competition. She was front and center, commending the weight of the massive negative space to the center of our room, while offsetting the masculine line of the space with her beautiful scalloped curves, all while mimicking the petal shape line of the tub (that was an unexpected bonus). We were in Love. Which leads me to my only criticism of your light, its "Love Me Not" title.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Modern Bathroom Lighting & The Love Me Not Pendant

The Love Me Not draws from childhood memories of picking petals off of daisies. The LED pendant’s delicate curves and diffused light are crafted from five layers of Evonik acrylic with a porcelain-like matte finish. Each pendant is hand-formed so no two fixtures are identical. The Love Me Not pendant is feminine and playful, soft and refined. As a grand statement piece, the Love Me Not floral pendant light reaches its full potential as it casts a warm glow. Deanne Walczak of 360° Design shows her process through her Instagram, to give viewers a peek at the design process, intriguing details, and final installations of her residential interiors, including this modern bathroom design.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Discover the Love Me Not Pendant" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fproducts%2Flove-me-not%2F|title:Love%20Me%20Not||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="See More Lighting Projects" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fprojects%2F|title:Love%20Me%20Not||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]

As the first international storefront for the 131-year old brand, Claus Porto New York reflects the design themes and motifs of its base culture under the direction of Jeremy Barbour with Tacklebox.   The 42-foot archway greets customers as they enter into an immersive experience. 1,500 tiles of milled Portuguese cork are faceted to mimic Lisbon's historic Casa Dos Bicos. Juniper's THIN Multiples Dyad lines the entire archway to act as a central focus, guiding customers through the space. The Dyad has about 10 connected sections, creating two long profiles of light with a 1/2-inch profile. FAQ: How Do I Choose a Power Supply? Our Power Supply Guide

Jun
11

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We regularly get questions regarding power supplies. We understand they tend to be the most complex part of lighting, which is why we continue to simplify this option. We recommend discussing power supplies with your electrician or our team prior to purchasing if you're unsure of compatibility with your space and fixture.

What is a power supply?

Understanding what type of power supply you need starts with an understanding of why you need one in the first place. A power supply is connected between the main line of power and your light fixture. It converts line voltage to 24VDC low voltage so your LED fixture is able to handle the proper amount of output voltage. All LED light fixtures need a power supply because if you connected an LED fixture straight to the main power source, your LED fixture will become overloaded and blow out.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="17820" img_size="full" alignment="center"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

1. Where will your power supply be located?

Power supplies can either be local or remotely located. Essentially, the difference is that local power supplies at located directly above the fixture, within a canopy on the ceiling. Remote power supplies are located away from the fixture and in an accessible location, like a closet or cabinet area. Learn more about the differences here.

2. What kind of dimming does your space require?

This is a variable that is determined by your electrician. Juniper offers either 2-Wire/TRIAC/Forward Phase, 0-10V, or 3-Wire/Ecosystem dimming options. Generally, 2-Wire/TRIAC/Forward Phase dimming is hooked up to a wall dimmer or switch. This is standard in residential or basic electric situations when the fixture is powered by a light switch. This is our most common option for single-fixture setups or residential spaces. 0-10V refers to the dimming range in volts. At 10V, the lights controlled by the dimmer are at 100% brightness. At 1V, the lights are at 10% measured brightness. At 0V, it either turns the lights off or has the lights dimmed to the lowest possible level and a switch is required to turn the lights completely off. 0-10V dimming is compatible with many wireless dimming systems, Lutron, and Leviton systems. This can be used to connect numerous fixtures together ideal for commercial or hospitality settings. 3-Wire is a Lutron-specific capability used for Lutron Ecosystem setups and is compatible with the Caseta wireless dimming system. Sometimes, our clients are determined to use name brands familiar to them for power supplies. Since Lutron is a reputable brand and well-known through the industry, clients have peace of mind when purchasing a Lutron product. Although all of our power supplies are reputable and well-tested, we offer this option for clients who are setting up a new 3-Wire system or adding to an existing one.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="17193" img_size="full" alignment="center"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

3. What is your input voltage?

Juniper offers universal input power supplies, so all of our power supplies should work with any location’s voltage, across the globe. If you’re curious, depending on your location, your area’s voltage is assigned to you. Usually, it’s either 120V in the America’s, or 277V for European areas. Check this voltage map to see your location’s voltage.

4. What is your fixture's total wattage?

Juniper calculates this for you and we only provide power supplies compatible with your fixture’s wattage. However, this is helpful to understand when connecting multiple fixtures to the same power supply. If you plan to do this, we recommend telling our team so we can guide you in the right direction. Once you calculate the total wattage you’d like to connect to a power supply, it’s important to look at the power supplies’ output wattage. Your fixture can not exceed this value. Juniper offers power supplies up to 96W, and when a fixture exceeds one power supply, it’s easy to install the fixture on two power supplies together. Juniper uses a 10% buffer for power supply output wattage, so that the fixture’s wattage doesn’t get too close to overloading the power supply. For example, we only connect fixtures with a wattage of 54W or less to a 60W power supply.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]As always, we recommend checking with your licensed electrician or our sales team prior to choosing power supplies. For any and all questions regarding power requirements and lighting inquiries, please don't hesitate to contact us![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Browse All Lighting" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fproducts%2F|title:Products||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Read More FAQ's" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Ffrequently-asked-questions%2F|title:Products||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Team Juniper Takes a Field Trip to Dia:Beacon

May
31

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This past week, Juniper's team took a day trip to break the daily routine. Our team ventured 60 miles north of New York City, to Beacon, NY. Beacon is a town full of eateries, hiking, flea markets, and above all, art. With a handful of art galleries located on Beacon's Main Street alone, the town becomes a hub for modern art in all media. On the outskirts of Main Street sits Dia:Beacon.

About Dia

Dia was founded in New York City in 1974 by Philippa de Menil, Heiner Friedrich, and Helen Winkler to help artists achieve visionary projects that might not otherwise be realized because of scale or scope. To suggest the institution’s role in enabling such ambitions, they selected the name “Dia,” taken from the Greek word meaning “through.” Today, Dia is a constellation of sites, from the iconic permanent, site-specific artworks and installations in New York, the American West and Germany; to an exhibition program that has commissioned dozens of breakthrough projects; to the vast galleries of Dia:Beacon; and finally the programs of education and public engagement.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="18514" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]In May 2003, Dia Art Foundation opened Dia:Beacon on the banks of the Hudson River in Beacon, New York, in a former Nabisco box printing factory. The museum presents Dia’s collection of art from the 1960s to the present as well as special exhibitions and public programs. Since its opening, Dia:Beacon has helped transform the city of Beacon into a vibrant arts destination for visitors from the region, New York City, and beyond.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="18519" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" link="https://www.diaart.org/"][vc_column_text]

3 New Lighting Upgrades for Spring 2019

May
30

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]For Spring 2019, we've been busy preparing lighting upgrades to offer new capabilities for our lighting designs. With more efficient parts and new components, Juniper has now widened installation limits to include many new options. Discover our upgrades and how they improve our lighting's capabilities.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="17809" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/local-ceiling-canopy/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

1. New Local Canopies

We've redesigned our local canopies to not only be more minimal and thoughtfully designed, but we've added some new capabilities. Our new design includes a rotatable perforated collar. Available in Standard and Large sizes to complement standard-sized suspended lighting and larger pendants or chandeliers. The perforated collar keeps the power supply inside cool, drawing heat away from the canopy and ultimately increasing its lifespan. Its rotatable feature benefits designs like the THIN Primaries that are center-mounted to the canopy. Users can now rotate the fixture to align to surrounding spaces and furniture as it's installed. With a larger size now available to hold up to two 96W power supplies, virtually all suspended designs up to 177W, can be locally powered.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="17322" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/local-ceiling-canopy/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

2. More Efficient LED's

We've upgraded all of our LED's to be even more efficient than before. We used to offer 78 lm/watt, which, by industry standards is very efficient. We now offer a 90 lm/watt LED standard for all of our THIN and Axis designs. Instead of adding brightness to our segments, we've kept our lumens the same and reduced the wattage per light segment. This results in our new light segments each dropping about 3W while maintaining the same brightness. Essentially, this means more LEDs can fit on a single power supply. Users can now power up to 27 ft of a single light segment, compared to a previous 22 ft, on a 96W power supply. This increases energy efficiency, simplifies installation, and reduces the cost of extra power supplies.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="18540" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

3. Title 24 Certified

Juniper is now Title 24 Certified, which is a required electrical standard for California projects. It is used to discourage using CFL and incandescent lamping in new construction projects to promote a sustainable and energy efficient environment. In order to pass their standards, lighting is tested for low wattage, flickering, power-on speeds, and audible dimming. With this certification, Juniper's THIN and Axis Collection fixtures have been cleared for all California projects. Our Metropolis Collection is currently pending, but we expect that to change in the coming year. Having this certification ensures that they are held to the standards of Title 24 to offer low wattage LEDs that don't flicker or emit sound when dimming. When users turn on Juniper lighting, the fixture immediately reaches its full brightness, instead of a CFL's power-on speed, which turns on dim and slowly gets brighter over time.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="18541" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/components/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Juniper's Modern Lighting Upgrades

We offer lighting upgrades throughout the year as a way to improve our existing collections based on feedback from our clients. Often they begin as custom requests that we design, prototype, and create for a specific project. As we discover that these options solve problems for multiple users, we incorporate them into our standard product line to improve usability. If you have custom requests or need help with a project, please contact our team.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Browse All Lighting" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fproducts%2F|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="View Components" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fcomponents%2F|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Explore More Articles" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fmodern-lighting-blog%2F|||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]
