The Industry City campus showroom in Brooklyn, NY offers a place where clients can view samples of the made-to-order furniture in person. The furniture is arranged in simple vignettes to make the showroom cozy and inviting, adorned with Juniper contemporary light fixtures. “When we decided to launch our brand internationally, New York was a natural choice. It was home [at one point] to both of us and it’s where we conceived of our business, so it’s always been a special place.”

-Das, Co-Founder

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Architectural Digest highlights the Brooklyn campus as a booming design center, quickly evolving out of its industrial history and into a design-focused collection of small studios and shops, complete with food courts and outdoor hubs. With the bones of the building preserved in their industrial aesthetic, DeMuro Das elevated the space into a modern-industrial style with luxurious elements (aka their furniture designs).   Juniper's THIN Lighting System is utilized as the space's sole light source, second to the sun-soaked wall-to-wall windows. The ultra-thin profile of the solid brass light segments complements the space's simplicity and modern design. The fixtures unify all corners of the space through a Satin Brass finish. A THIN Primaries Hexagon and enlarged THIN Primaries Rhombus adorn the back corners of the space, while a THIN Primaries Rectangle greets guests upon entry, and a THIN Multiples Dyad is suspended above the reception desk and office area of the showroom.   DeMuro Das continues to expand into stores from Chicago to Palm Beach with options in London.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Designer Highlight: Chris Taylor, Creative Director of Morris Adjmi

Mar
29

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Chris Taylor joined Morris Adjmi architects in 2012. In his role as Creative Director for Interiors, he works on many of the firm’s projects and ensures that all finished interiors are not only consistent with MA’s high design standards but are also harmoniously integrated with the entire building to produce a comprehensive, unified vision. He is particularly involved with large-scale residential and hospitality projects such as the Atlantic Plumbing buildings in Washington D.C. and the ROOST extended stay hotels. Prior to joining MA, Chris worked as an interior designer for a boutique firm in his native Sydney, Australia where he focused on conceptual design and interior detailing.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="17197" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" link="https://www.ma.com/"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]

1. What is your design background?

Studied Interior Architecture in Sydney and cut my teeth with a lot of fast-paced fashion retail and hospitality design back home before coming to NYC in 2012 to tackle larger scale residential and commercial projects with MA.

2. What are some of your favorite projects that you've worked on? Why?

The ROOST apartment hotel projects feel special because we helped create a brand from its inception. The first two properties made use of existing buildings so the brand aesthetic had to be strong enough to hold up within another building’s story. Every apartment feels unique -aimed to inspire guests and feel like a friend’s place that you’ve always wanted to stay in. The brand has since set the tone for the extended stay sector within the industry.
Our latest completed ROOST opened a few months ago at The Girard building in center city Philadelphia in an MA ground up building which is a first  – but also a dynamic project in itself with expansive, hotel-like amenities that fall somewhere between the residential and hospitality world.
We’re also in construction for a 61 room hotel out in the Rockaways – (including 7 extended stay suites). The location is a reminder of the city’s diversity – there are so many facets to New York and The Rockaways is a unique pocket where urban meets the beach…we’ve been conscious of creating spaces that resonate with the neighborhood and tell its story – the goal is that every guest feels like a local!

3. What are your favorite and least favorite design tips? Why?

Favorite design tip - don’t be afraid of color. Color in a space can be challenging but so rewarding when it’s done right. It can elevate or set a mood for a room in a second without any other pieces and I love that. Often in the work we do clients will resort to a neutral palette – it’s nice when we can find a happy medium.
Least favorite tip -I don’t always agree when a lighting designer tells me I need to light artwork…I think it depends on the piece – some work need shadow and look great in dark rooms. I don’t really think there are any design “rules” that you have to follow in general there are always exceptions…

4. How would you describe your design aesthetic?

A modern sensibility grounded in function and utility, but layered with honest material choices and lived-in warmth.

5. Why do you want to choose Juniper lighting in a possible project, and what is your favorite Juniper fixture?

Juniper’s principles for design ring true to MA’s interior studio and work – elegant restraint and obsessive about detail. The product is inherently modern but timeless which is why we love it.
Our new favorite is the outdoor Rail system - we just proposed for a  new rooftop terrace. It’s a deceptively simple fixture with loads of configurations – I love how stealth yet functional it is.

The 5,000 square foot facility holds our machinery, assembly, inventory, quality control, and packing areas, as well as a full office space and showroom. Shant Madjarian reflects on the beginnings of Juniper. Beginning at a young age in his father's manufacturing shop in Montreal, Shant came to New York as a natural entrepreneur. At first, he focused his efforts in economics, although eventually felt the need to own his own business. Revisiting his lighting roots, he began Juniper as a fresh and modern interpretation of his father's traditional lighting business, utilizing old-school methods, such as brass finishing, in a contemporary lighting collection.   Within architectural lighting, Juniper's focus is system-based lighting, mostly within offices, coworking, and hospitality spaces worldwide. It is in these projects where Juniper thrives with custom options and the ability to implement its modern LED lighting systems throughout an entire space. Shant Madjarian discusses the THIN Task Lamp, designed by Peter Bristol, as the start of the THIN System. The adjustable table lamp eventually translated into linear, geometric, and desk-mounted systems and continues to grow. As our collection grows, so does our team. Juniper has jumped to about 25 people in 2018, with a majority of women in administrative and assembly positions. With a worldwide reach in clientele, Juniper continues to expand to all corners of the globe.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Explore More Press Features" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fpress%2F|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Read More Articles" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fmodern-lighting-blog%2F|||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Meet Juniper’s Industrial Designer, Mark

Mar

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Before our contemporary lighting designs go to the public market, Juniper's Industrial Designer Mark, works with the rest of the Industrial Design team to conceptualize, prototype, troubleshoot, and develop new ideas.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="15229" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/meet-the-team/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]

1. What's your role at Juniper?

I am an Industrial Designer here at Juniper. We have a very collaborative design team that allows us to challenge our skills to develop new ideas that advance the inherited knowledge accumulated by Juniper in the pursuit of innovative lighting. With a background in the New York lighting scene and the Maker Movement of the last 10 years, I like to apply my experience to help solve problems encountered by small design focused businesses. Each day here at Juniper is very different. I am lucky to have the opportunity to collaborate with many of the different departments including development, marketing, sales, and production. This allows us to have unified goals and to build off of each others creativity and passion.

2. Where are you originally from?

I am from Littleton Colorado, living in Denver for most of my life. About 3 years ago I did the unthinkable and left the most enjoyable climate for the pursuit of enriching my cultural experience and expanding my creative opportunities. The thing I miss most about Colorado is the fresh mild dry air, and of course the Rocky Mountains.

3. What's the best thing about Juniper?

Juniper gives people the opportunity to express themselves and share ideas. We invest in ideas and the belief that if we work together we can accomplish more.
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="5048" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-task-lamp/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]

4. What are your interests outside of work?

For better or worse design is almost always on my mind. I seek out experiencing the creative energy New York City offers. Also, ball is life.

5. Where can we find you in New York the most?

The parks in New York are extremely important. When I’m in need of some fresh air nothing quite beats riding my bike to Prospect Park. Otherwise I’m usually hanging out in my neighborhood. I love the energy Bed Stuy offers, and it’s all right at my doorstep.

6. What's your favorite fixture at Juniper? Why?

My favorite fixture at Juniper is the THIN Task Lamp. It is seemingly simple, but the amount of effort and refinement to get it to where it is today is truly inspiring. It doesn’t seek your attention, instead, it simply provides an enjoyable experience causing you to invite it into your life.

The THIN Primaries Hexagon and a custom THIN Primaries Rhombus were installed in the back corners of the showroom above low coffee tables and seating arrangements.   A THIN Primaries Rectangle was installed as a natural entryway element to comfortably guide clients into the space. The Top 5 Materials Used in Contemporary Lighting Design in 2019

Mar
13

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Materiality is important, especially when it applies to lighting. As trends change and tastes develop over time, it's important to choose timeless lighting that fits your space. Above all, we recommend light fixtures with long lifespans, made of high-quality materials.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="15907" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products"][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

1. Brass

Known for its longevity and durable sustainability, brass has become a top material used in contemporary lighting design in 2019. Brass has actually been at the top of this list for a few years now, but in 2019, new brass finishes are rising in popularity. Brass requires minimal upkeep and cleaning needs, with environmentally friendly recyclability. Our THIN System is known for it's minimal, yet luxurious brass tubing in various finishes.
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="14618" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/thin-modular-lighting-system/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

2. Glass

Perhaps one of the most common materials in lighting, glass emphasizes luxury and crystal-like extravagance. With such versatility, glass can be textured or smooth, transparent or opaque, colored or clear. Glass lighting is easy to clean and displays a beautifully diffused aura.
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

3. Aluminum

Aluminum is best used for outdoor lighting and high-output fixtures, which is why this material made our top 5 list of contemporary lighting materials for 2019. As outdoor lighting becomes more curated and developed in the high-end design world, like our Rail Outdoor Lighting System, aluminum's demand continues to rise. Aluminum can be anodized for outdoor durability and waterproofing. Aluminum is also a fantastic heat absorber for high-output light fixtures, like the Metropolis Collection. Naturally drawing heat out of the core of the fixture, aluminum serves as the best vehicle in keeping fixtures at manageable temperatures.
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="10579" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/rail-outdoor-lighting-system/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

 4. Fabric

As one of this list's most wide-ranging and versatile materials, using fabric with lighting is becoming undeniably popular. As markets begin integrating sound-proofing capabilities with lighting, fabric naturally serves as the variable in color palette. By utilizing high textures, and bright colors and patterns, fabric can be a playful solution to designs.
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

5. Acrylic

Acrylic sometimes gets a bad wrap as a cheap material, however it's important to note there is a whole range of quality in acrylic out there. High-quality acrylic, such as the Evonik Satinice Acrylic used to product the Love Me Not Pendant, is used to create porcelain-like finishes, with a much higher flexibility than ceramic material. Acrylic's durability and lightweight body even tops glass as a diffuser of light. Juniper’s Lighting Innovations in 2018

Mar

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]2018 has been a year of lighting innovations. As a lighting manufacturer, we have always been head over heels about introducing new designs and product upgrades for our clients' benefits. Let's look back and explore all the wonders we have demonstrated in the past year to upgrade our products.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height="50px"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

New Modern Lighting Designs

We began the year debuting fresh lighting innovations at International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) such as the Axis Collection and the Metropolis Wall Sconce. We are also ecstatic to end 2018 bringing you our newest designs like the THIN Primaries Octagon, THIN Multiples Vertical Suspension, THIN Vertical Suspension, Axis X Vertical Suspension, and our first outdoor fixture, the Rail. With these fixtures now available on our website, we are able to give users more aesthetically pleasing options to embellish contemporary spaces. Please reach out to our sales team for any questions you may have.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="12854" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/rail-outdoor-lighting-system"][vc_column_text]

Ground Control Power Accessories

With the intent to release a series of power accessories to support all of our fixtures, we were able to present an effortless way to transpose standard desktops, panels, and other surfaces into high-end power management stations. The Ground Control Collection encapsulates a toggle switch, double USB port, power outlet, and two luxurious dimmers.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="11122" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/power-accessories/"][vc_column_text]

Cable Collars for Center-Mounting

Our THIN suspended fixtures are direct-mounted using slim aircraft cables and power cords. However, we wanted to provide a simple yet striking solution to further refine our fixtures' orientations. Our Product Development team approached this upgrade by inventing cable collars for THIN linear suspensions and THIN Primaries.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="13423" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/cable-collar-thin-primaries-suspension/"][vc_column_text]

Lower Wattage

One thing our team internally focused on is efficiency. From 8 watts, 24 in. segments will be 6 watts. On the other hand, 36 in. segments use 12.3 watts, but will be lowered to 9 watts. This upgrade allows more energy efficiency and more units to be powered by the same power supply without sacrifcing lumens. We are continuously trying to generate new lighting innovations to make all of our products among the most competent solutions in the industry.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="12570" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-suspension/"][vc_column_text]

Power Supplies with Universal Capabilities

We provided two different power supplies for our US and international clients. Searching far and wide for a convenient innovation to cater to all locations, we replaced our separate power supplies to a single power supply that now offers universal capabilities for 120-277V settings. Discover the right voltage for your fixture using our voltage world map.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height="40px"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="10291" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/2018/09/12/voltage-map/"][vc_column_text]
