“When we decided to launch our brand internationally, New York was a natural choice. It was home [at one point] to both of us and it’s where we conceived of our business, so it’s always been a special place.”

-Das, Co-Founder

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Architectural Digest highlights the Brooklyn campus as a booming design center, quickly evolving out of its industrial history and into a design-focused collection of small studios and shops, complete with food courts and outdoor hubs. With the bones of the building preserved in their industrial aesthetic, DeMuro Das elevated the space into a modern-industrial style with luxurious elements (aka their furniture designs).   Juniper's THIN Lighting System is utilized as the space's sole light source, second to the sun-soaked wall-to-wall windows. The ultra-thin profile of the solid brass light segments complements the space's simplicity and modern design. The fixtures unify all corners of the space through a Satin Brass finish. A THIN Primaries Hexagon and enlarged THIN Primaries Rhombus adorn the back corners of the space, while a THIN Primaries Rectangle greets guests upon entry, and a THIN Multiples Dyad is suspended above the reception desk and office area of the showroom.   DeMuro Das continues to expand into stores from Chicago to Palm Beach with options in London.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Designer Highlight: Chris Taylor, Creative Director of Morris Adjmi

Mar
29

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Chris Taylor joined Morris Adjmi architects in 2012. In his role as Creative Director for Interiors, he works on many of the firm’s projects and ensures that all finished interiors are not only consistent with MA’s high design standards but are also harmoniously integrated with the entire building to produce a comprehensive, unified vision. He is particularly involved with large-scale residential and hospitality projects such as the Atlantic Plumbing buildings in Washington D.C. and the ROOST extended stay hotels. Prior to joining MA, Chris worked as an interior designer for a boutique firm in his native Sydney, Australia where he focused on conceptual design and interior detailing.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="17197" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" link="https://www.ma.com/"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]

1. What is your design background?

Studied Interior Architecture in Sydney and cut my teeth with a lot of fast-paced fashion retail and hospitality design back home before coming to NYC in 2012 to tackle larger scale residential and commercial projects with MA.

2. What are some of your favorite projects that you've worked on? Why?

The ROOST apartment hotel projects feel special because we helped create a brand from its inception. The first two properties made use of existing buildings so the brand aesthetic had to be strong enough to hold up within another building’s story. Every apartment feels unique -aimed to inspire guests and feel like a friend’s place that you’ve always wanted to stay in. The brand has since set the tone for the extended stay sector within the industry.
Our latest completed ROOST opened a few months ago at The Girard building in center city Philadelphia in an MA ground up building which is a first  – but also a dynamic project in itself with expansive, hotel-like amenities that fall somewhere between the residential and hospitality world.
We’re also in construction for a 61 room hotel out in the Rockaways – (including 7 extended stay suites). The location is a reminder of the city’s diversity – there are so many facets to New York and The Rockaways is a unique pocket where urban meets the beach…we’ve been conscious of creating spaces that resonate with the neighborhood and tell its story – the goal is that every guest feels like a local!

3. What are your favorite and least favorite design tips? Why?

Favorite design tip - don’t be afraid of color. Color in a space can be challenging but so rewarding when it’s done right. It can elevate or set a mood for a room in a second without any other pieces and I love that. Often in the work we do clients will resort to a neutral palette – it’s nice when we can find a happy medium.
Least favorite tip -I don’t always agree when a lighting designer tells me I need to light artwork…I think it depends on the piece – some work need shadow and look great in dark rooms. I don’t really think there are any design “rules” that you have to follow in general there are always exceptions…

4. How would you describe your design aesthetic?

A modern sensibility grounded in function and utility, but layered with honest material choices and lived-in warmth.

5. Why do you want to choose Juniper lighting in a possible project, and what is your favorite Juniper fixture?

Juniper’s principles for design ring true to MA’s interior studio and work – elegant restraint and obsessive about detail. The product is inherently modern but timeless which is why we love it.
Our new favorite is the outdoor Rail system - we just proposed for a  new rooftop terrace. It’s a deceptively simple fixture with loads of configurations – I love how stealth yet functional it is.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Marras Design is a New York City-based firm catered to luxury spaces and high-end lighting design.  Before co-founding his own firm in 2013, Jon-Carlo Marras lead projects for Yale Moyer Lighting for numerous years. There, he built an impressive portfolio including high-profile client homes in the Hamptons like Ina Garten, Helmut Lang, Ray Dalio, André Balazs, and Eli Zabar. Ryan Curtis, Principal of Marras Design, has a practical background in physics, mathematics, and construction, giving him a headstart in functional design.   Together, the design duo creates stunning indoor and outdoor lighting designs. From residential to commercial spaces, and everything in between, their designs include focal lighting installations and ambient architectural lighting.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="17349" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-picture-light/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="17347" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/love-me-not/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="17350" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" link="http://https://marrasdesign.com/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]This year at Architectural Digest Design Show 2019, Juniper contributed lighting to Marras Design's booth, creating warmth and softness through lighting. To illuminate Marras Design's signage, Juniper contributed the THIN Surface Mount Picture Light in Satin Brass. Designed by Peter Bristol, the THIN Modular Lighting System provides magnetically-connected light segments that extend into custom shapes and lengths with simple installation. The 5,000 square foot facility holds our machinery, assembly, inventory, quality control, and packing areas, as well as a full office space and showroom. Shant Madjarian reflects on the beginnings of Juniper. Beginning at a young age in his father's manufacturing shop in Montreal, Shant came to New York as a natural entrepreneur. At first, he focused his efforts in economics, although eventually felt the need to own his own business. Revisiting his lighting roots, he began Juniper as a fresh and modern interpretation of his father's traditional lighting business, utilizing old-school methods, such as brass finishing, in a contemporary lighting collection.   Within architectural lighting, Juniper's focus is system-based lighting, mostly within offices, coworking, and hospitality spaces worldwide. It is in these projects where Juniper thrives with custom options and the ability to implement its modern LED lighting systems throughout an entire space. Shant Madjarian discusses the THIN Task Lamp, designed by Peter Bristol, as the start of the THIN System. The adjustable table lamp eventually translated into linear, geometric, and desk-mounted systems and continues to grow. As our collection grows, so does our team. Juniper has jumped to about 25 people in 2018, with a majority of women in administrative and assembly positions. With a worldwide reach in clientele, Juniper continues to expand to all corners of the globe.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Explore More Press Features" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fpress%2F|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Read More Articles" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fmodern-lighting-blog%2F|||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The THIN Primaries Hexagon and a custom THIN Primaries Rhombus were installed in the back corners of the showroom above low coffee tables and seating arrangements.   A THIN Primaries Rectangle was installed as a natural entryway element to comfortably guide clients into the space. The Top 5 Materials Used in Contemporary Lighting Design in 2019

Mar
13

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Materiality is important, especially when it applies to lighting. As trends change and tastes develop over time, it's important to choose timeless lighting that fits your space. Above all, we recommend light fixtures with long lifespans, made of high-quality materials.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="15907" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products"][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

1. Brass

Known for its longevity and durable sustainability, brass has become a top material used in contemporary lighting design in 2019. Brass has actually been at the top of this list for a few years now, but in 2019, new brass finishes are rising in popularity. Brass requires minimal upkeep and cleaning needs, with environmentally friendly recyclability. Our THIN System is known for it's minimal, yet luxurious brass tubing in various finishes.

2. Glass

Perhaps one of the most common materials in lighting, glass emphasizes luxury and crystal-like extravagance. With such versatility, glass can be textured or smooth, transparent or opaque, colored or clear. Glass lighting is easy to clean and displays a beautifully diffused aura.
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

3. Aluminum

Aluminum is best used for outdoor lighting and high-output fixtures, which is why this material made our top 5 list of contemporary lighting materials for 2019. As outdoor lighting becomes more curated and developed in the high-end design world, like our Rail Outdoor Lighting System, aluminum's demand continues to rise. Aluminum can be anodized for outdoor durability and waterproofing. Aluminum is also a fantastic heat absorber for high-output light fixtures, like the Metropolis Collection. Naturally drawing heat out of the core of the fixture, aluminum serves as the best vehicle in keeping fixtures at manageable temperatures.
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="10579" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/rail-outdoor-lighting-system/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

 4. Fabric

As one of this list's most wide-ranging and versatile materials, using fabric with lighting is becoming undeniably popular. As markets begin integrating sound-proofing capabilities with lighting, fabric naturally serves as the variable in color palette. By utilizing high textures, and bright colors and patterns, fabric can be a playful solution to designs.
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

5. Acrylic

Acrylic sometimes gets a bad wrap as a cheap material, however it's important to note there is a whole range of quality in acrylic out there. High-quality acrylic, such as the Evonik Satinice Acrylic used to product the Love Me Not Pendant, is used to create porcelain-like finishes, with a much higher flexibility than ceramic material. Acrylic's durability and lightweight body even tops glass as a diffuser of light. Offering a delicate softness with moldable and durable attributes, frosted acrylic becomes a luxurious material for lighting.

We are also ecstatic to end 2018 bringing you our newest designs like the THIN Primaries Octagon, THIN Multiples Vertical Suspension, THIN Vertical Suspension, Axis X Vertical Suspension, and our first outdoor fixture, the Rail. With these fixtures now available on our website, we are able to give users more aesthetically pleasing options to embellish contemporary spaces. Please reach out to our sales team for any questions you may have.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="12854" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/rail-outdoor-lighting-system"][vc_column_text]

Lower Wattage

One thing our team internally focused on is efficiency. From 8 watts, 24 in. segments will be 6 watts. On the other hand, 36 in. segments use 12.3 watts, but will be lowered to 9 watts. This upgrade allows more energy efficiency and more units to be powered by the same power supply without sacrifcing lumens. We are continuously trying to generate new lighting innovations to make all of our products among the most competent solutions in the industry.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="12570" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-suspension/"][vc_column_text]

FAQ: Which Lens Finish Should I Choose for Modern Bathroom Vanity Lights?

Mar
04

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Choosing the correct lighting for a modern bathroom vanity is imperative, as it should provide functionality and the proper design aesthetic for your space. Between clear or frosted lenses for modern bathroom vanity lights, we recommend a frosted lens finish due to its ability to diffuse a wider and softer beam of light. This omits shadows that could make subjects look unflattering and offers an even cast of light. Minimalist White Kitchen Designed by Bright DesignLab with THIN Surface Mounts

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The kitchen and dining space of a 1969 treehouse in Portland, Oregon was remodeled by Bright DesignLab into a bright, multi-functional space for a couple who wanted to elevate their dining experience. The space was described to initially have three distinct areas, influencing them to merge contemporary architectural elements that tie together to design a large, cohesive space.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="16508" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" link="https://www.brightdesignlab.com/"][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="16507" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-display-light/"][vc_column_text]

THIN Surface Mount Display Light with 2 Connected Segments in Satin Brass

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]The kitchen exhibits an all-white motif, from its clean white walls that stretch up to the European white modern cabinetry. Hints of brass were added throughout the space for depth, like the cupboards' brass pulls with a knurled texture, mounted on a rectangular backplate. They connected 2 light segments of our THIN Surface Mount Display Light in Satin Brass and installed it as central under-cabinet lighting to cast a warm glow on the Carrara marble.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="16502" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-display-light/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="16503" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-display-light/"][vc_column_text]

Matte Black Faucet by California Faucets

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Black accents were distributed throughout the minimalist white kitchen to contrast the solid brass lighting and cabinet pulls while making a bold statement. The plumbing hardware by California Faucets is tinted in matte black, a popular style in modern interiors for its sophisticated appeal and also a strategic design that rids of evident fingerprints, especially in culinary spaces.   A concrete central island connects to a dark-toned countertop with slender, symmetrical legs, adhering to the linear profile of the space. They also customized organic-shaped bar stools to diffuse sharp lines and indicate a relaxing atmosphere when owners decide to transform the kitchen into a space beyond its purpose.   Photos by Bright DesignLab[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="16540" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" link="https://www.brightdesignlab.com/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Alana Fletcher, Founder of Alana Fletcher Interiors

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]Alana Fletcher Interiors was founded by Alana Fletcher herself, bringing over 10 years of experience in the design industry. The firm in Toronto, Canada is equipped with a team of professionals who specialize in luxury commercial and residential spaces. We interviewed Fletcher to learn how she began her journey and discover her taste in remodeling spaces.

How did you start in the design industry?

My background is in fashion and print production. I initially produced magazine and catalog spreads for various designers and publications, focusing on interiors. It was only when I had my second baby that I shifted over to interiors (almost 13 years ago!). Being immersed in these facets of bringing ads to life was the stepping stone I needed to direct me to the path of where I am today—from overseeing the design and build of the sets, propping, and budgeting. Today, my firm provides design services for large scale residences, offices, and retail spaces.

What is your design aesthetic?

My design aesthetic favors clean lines and modern spaces that are liveable and warm. Our interiors are timeless, solution-based designs.

Do you have any favorite projects you've worked on?

Each design opportunity holds a special place in my heart, but if I had to single out a specific project, I'd point you toward our Dunbar project. The incredible trust the clients had in our design direction and process elevated the entire experience for me. Ultimately, I believe it elevated the final outcome as well. The whole team was exceptional![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_gallery interval="3" images="16240,16241,16238,16239" img_size="full" onclick=""][vc_column_text]

What are your favorite and least favorite design tips?

A home is almost everyone's most substantial investment, and the way the budget is allocated during a build or renovation should provide them with an interior that is functional. Be hardworking and thorough during planning and selecting finishes. My number one tip would be to select finishes that will stand the test of time. Next, always choose solid core doors. Always. Lastly, I recommend painting your walls and ceiling in the same shade for a more cohesive, grand look. I've used this application with both dark and light colors and it works no matter the shade!

Why do you trust Juniper light fixtures in your projects?

Juniper provided us with the perfect solution when we were struggling to find a very minimal profile pendant that extended beyond a typical pendant length for a contemporary kitchen renovation. The versatility of the THIN Modular Lighting System was perfect in every way. It highlighted the interior architecture of the room and did not interfere with the views outside of the house. We also recently saw the Love Me Not on display at Hollace Cluny, a retailer in Toronto, and we were completely smitten![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval="3" images="14094,14108,14095,14111" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" custom_links="#E-8_aHR0cCUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy5qdW5pcGVyLWRlc2lnbi5jb20lMkYyMDE4JTJGMTIlMkYyOCUyRmFsYW5hLWZsZXRjaGVyLXJlc2lkZW50aWFsLWtpdGNoZW4lMkYlMkNodHRwJTNBJTJGJTJGd3d3Lmp1bmlwZXItZGVzaWduLmNvbSUyRjIwMTglMkYxMiUyRjI4JTJGYWxhbmEtZmxldGNoZXItcmVzaWRlbnRpYWwta2l0Y2hlbiUyRiUyQ2h0dHAlM0ElMkYlMkZ3d3cuanVuaXBlci1kZXNpZ24uY29tJTJGMjAxOCUyRjEyJTJGMjglMkZhbGFuYS1mbGV0Y2hlci1yZXNpZGVudGlhbC1raXRjaGVuJTJGJTJDaHR0cCUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy5qdW5pcGVyLWRlc2lnbi5jb20lMkYyMDE4JTJGMTIlMkYyOCUyRmFsYW5hLWZsZXRjaGVyLXJlc2lkZW50aWFsLWtpdGNoZW4lMkY="][vc_column_text]
