We’ve never wanted it to feel commercial, or too much like a store. As soon as we saw Juniper’s THIN Suspension lighting, we knew it was the solution. 360° Design Installs Love Me Not Pendant in Modern Bathroom

Jul
09

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Deanne Walczak, Principal Designer of 360° Design, specializes in residential interior design. After her latest project, which installed a Love Me Not Pendant in a modern bathroom space, we asked her a few questions to understand her background, design philosophy, and more about this project.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="18704" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/love-me-not/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Tell us about your background.

My career to become an Interior Designer, was not a conventional path one might assume you would take. I went to school for Graphic Design, and with numerous twists of faith, I ended up starting my 360º Design company many years later.   Looking back on some of my careers along the way; whether it was working in the television + professional sports industries, Graphic Design or Marketing platforms, I take note of a few common threads that were always a constant throughout my journey. All my jobs were always hands-on; in very creative fields, and every day the challenges + tasks assigned, were different.  These key qualities, I have recognized as assets to me, and are my favorite part of my current role as an Interior Designer. I love that my job is different every single day. That the challenges of each space, and the vision of each client is always different, and the solutions are commonly found by pairing a touch of psychology & vision, paired with key design elements, that all lead to the best design solutions for the space at hand.   I am in my sixth year of operating my own business, with six years prior to that, working in the industry. I have mostly work with residential spaces, but have had the privilege of working on commercial projects as well. In addition to those platforms, I also do virtual home staging + conventional home staging, with a few realtors in the Westchester area.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="18701" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/love-me-not/"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]

What is your design philosophy?

I avoid niching myself with one particular style or direction when it comes to designing spaces for my clients. I find myself following a Frank Lloyd Wright philosophy, of balancing and pairing objects of function and form, to create a more harmonious optimal living space. Connecting organic material from nature, with an optimal space plan, proper lighting, and a great use of color, allows the elements to create a more harmonious living environment. In addition to this core philosophy, I utilize my past Graphic Design abilities, to help support my visions more clearly to the client(s) by creating visual schematics of their project in the early stages of development. After realizing that the majority of my clients had difficulty envisioning the overall plan/direction of their project, which delayed making key decisions needed to propel the project forward, I quickly realized that if I could show them the end result, rather than trying to convince them of my plan. It would now allow them to take much bigger risks with the decision process, or with items in the space, that they normally would not consider. It was a win-win for both parties and has proven to be a valuable resource for my design company, and the proof that a picture really is worth a thousand words.

What was your inspiration for this project?

With this current master bathroom project, there wasn't one clear inspiration element or idea that drove us to the end result. It was more the "sum of the parts" kind of a vision. I discussed with the clients what their wants and needs were for the 20 x 20 master bathroom suite and then started sending inspiration photos to tap into a direction of the type of room that inspired them.   They had also been traveling abroad and determined a feel and a few amenities that they experienced while on their travels that they knew they wanted to incorporate in their space. And I knew, to not lose sight of staying true to the style of the home, which was Arts and Crafts/Art Deco. From there my vision took shape, and the space planning began. We discussed details, tweaked and fine-tuned our direction to incorporate a few elements from two design options, and came up with our ultimate vision.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="18703" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/love-me-not/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

What obstacles did you face for this project?

When I think back on building this bathroom, there were very few obstacles we encountered throughout the project. We had to adjust the placement of where we used the teak on the ceiling due to wiring and ducts, and we changed the direction of the layout of the floor tiling so it ran at a vertical direction instead of a horizontal direction when it came up the shower wall. I cannot lie though, I did lose sleep a few nights on one key component.   My client had a doctors appointment and was inspired by the walls at the building in which her appointment was. We had originally had our porcelain floor tile continuing onto the shower walls, rather than changing to a different decorative tile, as most bathroom showers do. The decision to do so was based on the over-scaled custom Acacia double vanity that was going in the room, on the opposite wall, which we anticipated to be our "wow" in the room (until we found our light). The species of wood being used had a lot of movement and we felt the simplicity of a solid, monochromatic, clean-lined tile continuing up the wall would offset this feature on the vanity. She came home with pictures of the walls and asked if we could do that in the shower. It was staying with the existing monochromatic palette and scale of the existing porcelain tile originally selected, but we would be adding every couple of tiles a blue stone thick slab that would ultimately create a subtle in and out movement to an otherwise flat wall. I drew out a plan and discussed with my contractor to implement this new feature to randomly add the slabs of bluestone to offset the existing porcelain. As the plan developed and began taking shape, the client's husband questioned the decision more than once, which reinforced a small doubt inside me that I had not conveyed to anyone else. So I lost a few nights of sleep over this, but every time I got back in front of that wall, I convinced him to stay the course and trust the vision.   I remember reading a quote that just helped me keep my doubts at bay and encourage the vision. It said, "Feeling nervous is a good sign you're making something original"...and that we did! He trusted the process and saw the vision through, and loved the ultimate design. And I eventually exhaled and caught up on my loss of sleep.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="18702" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/love-me-not/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Why did you choose the Love Me Not Pendant?

Throughout the entire duration of the production of the bathroom, we researched for the perfect light to ground our anticipated space. We actually had purchased one very early on in the project that we had agreed worked, but by all means, did not love. When the teak ceiling needed to be moved to the center of the room instead of on the soffit line, like we had originally designed, it changed our vision and I suggested we return the first purchased light. I knew that it was never going to be able to hold the center of the room, like the negative space dictated the right fixture to do. The teak was now being used on the ceiling centered in the room, and was going to be the background to something that needed to be amazing. At this point, it also became clear that the fixture needed to be something that featured a soft, feminine line, since the space around it had evolved and was reading very masculine. We needed to try and balance the masculine to feminine line of the room and offset the elements of the hard stone and wood that were used throughout the rest of the space, and helped support the curvy feminine line of our beautiful Cheviot modern claw foot tub.  And so the search continued.   Everything just fell flat.... Until one day, our search ended with your beautiful custom Love Me Not lighting fixture. It had me from hello. I  saw it, and I knew immediately it was the everything we had been searching months for. It was just the perfect bling to the little black dress. I seriously didn't know how I was going to move on from it if the clients did not see the absolute perfection it had to offer to their space. And just like that, our amazing, magnificent, Acacia over-scaled custom vanity had competition. She was front and center, commending the weight of the massive negative space to the center of our room, while offsetting the masculine line of the space with her beautiful scalloped curves, all while mimicking the petal shape line of the tub (that was an unexpected bonus). We were in Love. Which leads me to my only criticism of your light, its "Love Me Not" title.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Modern Bathroom Lighting & The Love Me Not Pendant

The Love Me Not draws from childhood memories of picking petals off of daisies. The LED pendant’s delicate curves and diffused light are crafted from five layers of Evonik acrylic with a porcelain-like matte finish. Each pendant is hand-formed so no two fixtures are identical. The Love Me Not pendant is feminine and playful, soft and refined. As a grand statement piece, the Love Me Not floral pendant light reaches its full potential as it casts a warm glow. Deanne Walczak of 360° Design shows her process through her Instagram, to give viewers a peek at the design process, intriguing details, and final installations of her residential interiors, including this modern bathroom design.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Discover the Love Me Not Pendant" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fproducts%2Flove-me-not%2F|title:Love%20Me%20Not||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="See More Lighting Projects" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fprojects%2F|title:Love%20Me%20Not||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Design Director Junho Choi Talks About On Restaurant Project

Who was involved in the project and what roles did they play? What were some common threads between the team members?

Studio Too is comprised of a team of interior designers based in Brooklyn NY. We enjoy the challenges and opportunities of working within existing constructs.

What was the design inspiration and philosophy behind the space?

We worked with the owner and chef of the restaurant - Hand Hospitality - to create a space that would not distract from the simple, but very sophisticated menu. The hotpot served at O:N exposes the cooking process as each ingredient is added to the bowl of broth cooking in front of you. We translated this by stripping the interior down to it's basic elements. The existing cinderblock walls and concrete floors are exposed while new elements such as the Juniper lighting, stone bench and kitchen walls contrast these rough textures. Each interior element is clear and honest on its own but creates a cohesive space when viewed as a whole.

What's your favorite area or part of the space?

Our favorite area is the bar and open kitchen area. The long narrow corridor opens up to two self-contained spaces, the existing footprint puts this space as the focal point of the restaurant and provides views into the kitchen.

Why did you choose Juniper lighting for this restaurant?

We were drawn to Juniper's lighting for its simplicity. Like the rest of the interior, the lights are the most elemental we could find with nothing unnecessary added to the design. When installed the fixture disappears while the warm light creates a great atmosphere for dining.

How did your personal aesthetic come into play for the project?

We try to be very delicate with our approach to a project and always take inspiration from the existing space. This has a different meaning for each project. For O:N it was important for us to not over design the interior and create a clear line between the new and the existing.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="17741" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/2019/05/02/on-restaurant-in-new-york-installs-thin-suspensions"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Discover Design Director Junho Choi's project here, to learn more about the space, design elements, and to see more photos by Chase Daniel.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Learn More About the ON Restaurant" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2F2019%2F05%2F02%2Fon-restaurant-in-new-york-installs-thin-suspensions|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Browse Lighting" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fproducts%2F|title:Products||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]

THIN Modular Lighting System Featured in Modern Loft

May

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Dyer Studio Inc. designed the Marshall Wells Building in the Pearl, located in Northwestern Portland. The multi-level penthouse offers clean design elements, including Juniper's own THIN Modular Lighting System to adorn the master bedroom and modern bathroom.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="17432" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-vanity-light/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In the master bedroom, natural medium-tone woods line the floors as well as outline windows and are matched through the bedroom's side tables. Grey and white neutrals are utilized through textiles to offer clean and airy aesthetics. To offset the light-to-medium tones in the space, Juniper's THIN Suspension adorns the center of the room above the bed. Its two-connected sections offers the ability to create custom dimensions for this space.

The bedroom and bathroom are connected through a divider wall with a window in the top quarter, to let light stream in through the bedroom, but offer the level of privacy a bathroom requires. The master bathroom showcases a modernized square bathtub and shower combination with stainless steel hardware and dark and light grey tilework. Its shared wall with the master bedroom features a light hexagonal tile by Ann Sacks in varying textures for a natural and tranquil aesthetic, complemented by the adjacent wall covered with similar tile in a slender rectangular shape.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="17435" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-vanity-light/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="17436" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-vanity-light/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On opposing sides of the bathroom are dual vanities, complete with medium-toned wood cabinetry by R. Olson Design to bring warmth and more natural texture to the spa-like setting. The central mirrors' pinstripe black frames are contrasted by Juniper's THIN Surface Mount Vanity Lights in Black Oxide finish. Rotatable LED light arrays are adjustable to direct light either toward or away from the user, providing an ideal set up for contemporary vanity lighting.

Staying within the existing plumbing constraints, we rearranged and expanded the bathroom footprint to create a luxurious ensuite. The goal was to bring natural light from the north bedroom windows into the bathroom space, which was previously shut off. A bath for two was a bonus. The new vanity provides an ideal makeup station in addition to generous storage.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The On Restaurant in New York offers a dining experience centered around induction cooking right at your table. The flow of time and shifts in temperature play pivotal roles in introducing each stage of the meal. From appetizers to main cooking pots, courses are inspired by various regions in Asia. On aims to present the essence of authentic flavors mixed with their own twists to create a truly unique experience. Their mission is to introduce a new genre of food in a creative, yet comforting way. By avoiding the trivial distractions in common trends, they choose to push their culinary skills to new frontiers to create a place that offers appetizing, soulful and innovative food.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_gallery interval="3" images="17740,17739,17736,17737" img_size="full"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="17738" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/the-wally/"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Designed by the Design Director for Studio Gaia, Junho Choi worked with the restaurant owners to create a new dining experience; one with no frills or trends, but one focused on authenticity, honesty, and flavor. The space is essentially stripped bare to push the focus to their culinary creations. With cement floors and walls, wooden ceilings and accent walls offer warmth to complement the space. Within the space is a glass accent wall with dry-erase figure drawings that add an artful focus. Each wooden table and chair set features an induction stovetop for guests to immerse themselves in a unique experience of Korean cuisine. Above the seating area is a row of THIN Suspensions in Satin Nickel to elongate the space. Its 1/2-inch profile keeps the aesthetic of the space modest, while offering a nod to modern industrial design in a luxurious way. Juniper's THIN Lighting System offers magnetic light segments for simple installation and 360° rotatable light after installation. To mark the restaurant's bathrooms, On has installed our Wally in Glossy White finish with custom restroom decals. Wally's are best used as an indicator light to mark occupancy, hotel room numbers, and more. The restaurant, located on Madison Avenue in New York, is the second of the owner's restaurant portfolio. Her Name Is Han, focused on Korean hot pots, noodles, and BBQ, is located on E31st Street.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="17742" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-suspension/"][vc_single_image image="17741" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-suspension/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Explore All Lighting" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fproducts%2F|title:Products||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_btn title="Browse More Projects" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.juniper-design.com%2Fmodern-lighting-projects-installations%2F|title:Products||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Staks Pancake Kitchen in Memphis Installs THIN Surface Mounts

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]GCD Interiors recently completed a project to revamp Staks Pancake House in Memphis, Tennessee. The interior was renovated to freshen the space and bring a clean aesthetic to the restaurant.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="17612" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-display-light/"][vc_column_text]Photography by Sarah Rossi Bell, Selavie Photography[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="17613" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-display-light/"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="17614" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" link="https://www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-display-light/"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Prior to the renovation, the restaurant featured branded aqua blue walls and clean white accents. The floors were patterned black and white, and a large lighting installation brought focus to the center of the dining room.   GCD Interiors updated this eatery with neutral wood floors that are much more subdued and natural, shifting focus from the floor upward and bringing elegance and comfort to the space. Still continuing the restaurant's blue and white signature interior, GCD deepened the wall color, and added rich brass accents for a bright contrast.   With brass linear frames on the wall aligned to each booth, a central THIN Surface Mount Display Light by Juniper splashes the wall with light. The Satin Brass finish matches the wall's brass frame. With the addition of brass accents to the setting, Staks was quickly elevated to an elegant dining space with rich materials and deep colors. The space now offers a high-end brunch location that the quality of the food can already live up to.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The space opens to a large dining room, lined with matching blue booths and white tabletops. The bartop brightens the room with more white accents and extra diner bar seating. Guests can enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch, and desserts in this cheerful and comforting space that's both recognizable and unforgettable.
